Jack's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week

Poor Jack has had a rough go of it lately.

It all started with a runny nose that started about two weeks ago. That left him feeling very grumpy.

Then last Sunday night he didn't go to sleep until 3am and was awake by 7am. He only took a 20 minute nap all day and was miserable and so grumpy. We took him to the doctor and discovered an ear infection. He started antibiotics and we thought things would start to improve.

They didn't.

He was still grouchy and not sleeping well and then Wednesday we noticed sores on his lips and in his mouth. Thursday we were off to the doctor again. This time she diagnosed cold sores (the herpes virus, yuck!). She prescribed an anti-viral and Tylenol with Codeine to help him sleep. Of course the Tylenol was nowhere in stock because the baby version isn't prescribed often, so the pharmacist had to call all over Utah Valley and finally found some all the way in Lehi. After so many nights of not sleeping, we were not going home without that stuff. Even with the stuff, he didn't sleep all that great the first two nights and was insanely grouchy. We (and sadly our neighbors) have heard far more screaming over the last few weeks than we ever care to hear again.

Poor Jack has to take so many medicines. He takes his antibiotics twice a day, his pain killers as needed, and the anti-viral FOUR times a day. He's a great sport about it.

And to add insult to injury, the doctor said it was time he was completely weaned (yes, he was still nursing, but just for a couple minutes right before bed). He had to stop so as not to spread the virus to mommy and then to future siblings. This has been one of the most unhappy things for him. That has been something he's wanted a lot especially being sick. And we are now figuring out how to get him to relax in a different way before nap and bedtime.

Fortunately, today he's doing a lot better. He slept for nine hours straight last night, ate more this morning than he has all week combined, and has not had a screaming fit yet. He is down for a nap and we're hoping for more improvement each day.

Poor little Jack!
